Hurricane Lamps

Hurricane lamps provide an elegant setting for candles that is also very functional. A hurricane lamp can come in many shapes and sizes. But it is typically characterized by tall glass walls with no roof so that a candle may be placed inside from the top. It is similar to the form of a drinking glass but usually in a larger size. The glass walls are convenient for shielding the flames of candles from the wind, hence the name hurricane lamps. Usually a pillar candle is used inside of these types of holders but votives and floating candles are common as well. This makes hurricane lamps ideal for outdoor settings, especially in eating arrangements. However the classic appearance of hurricane lamps is so attractive that many decorators also choose to employ them indoors. Hurricane lamps have a million applications including outdoor dining, centre pieces, floating candles, mantles and ledges or accent tables.

Outdoor Dining

For an outdoor eating-arrangement there is no better candleholder than the hurricane lamp. This is a classic Hollywood look for meals that works for everything from barbeques to wedding receptions. The soft glow of a pillar candle shielded by glass is ideal for the evening when there is less sunlight by which to see. However scented candles can be used during the daytime in order to discourage flying insects. At night an illuminated lamp will have the opposite effect. When designing with hurricane lamps for an outdoor event the look can be compliments with tablecloths and matching servingware.

Centre Pieces

Building a centre piece with hurricane lamps is simple enough. The easiest option would be a single hurricane lamp with one pillar candle inside of it. The tall glass walls of such lanterns can be placed nearly anywhere. This could be wedged in a bit of gravel or surrounded by a ring of flowers. By playing around with different levels by stacking flat surfaces you can place hurricane lamps at different heights on the table. You could also experiment with different levels inside of the hurricane lamp by filling it ornamental sand or stones.

Floating Candles

Another way to pull off hurricane lamps is with water. Keep in mind that some designs are more water proof than others. If a particular hurricane lamp is watertight however it can be used to shelter floating candles. These special candles are moulded into such a shape as to float on water. Many times they come in beautiful designs shaped like flowers or butterflies. The appearance of a lit candle floating in a pool of water is breathtaking. They can also be accompanied in the lamps with other types of floating objects like petals or bubbles.

Mantles & Ledges

One way to attractively arrange a selection of hurricane lamps is by lining them in a row on a shelf. This can be done symmetrically with several lamps of the same height in an even number. Or it can be more eclectic with a smattering of hurricane lamps of different heights in an odd amount. They can be interspersed with other decorative objects like glassware and ceramics, or stand alone. When each lamp is equipped with a flaming candle it illuminates the shelf in a way that seems magical. For an attractive fireplace mantle consider decorating the space with hurricane lamps.

Accent Tables

Another way to make use of hurricane lamps is by scattering them around various accent tables in the room. It has been established that hurricane lamps will keep flames from getting blown out. These kinds of lamps are so versatile that they also keep wax from dripping onto all types of furniture. There is not even a chance of overflowing because the translucent glass walls are very tall.  It is possible to put one on ever table in the room opening to door for prolonged candle usage. Try putting hurricane lanterns on the side table or a hallway table. They can be grouped in clusters or singly used.
