Wholesale Bookshelves

The joy of browsing through a collection of literary works on a shelf has not dwindled with time. There are an extraordinary amount of ways that a book shelf can be constructed. These days designers are making shelves out of all sorts of things like pipe fittings and wooden crates. But they all employ to same basic concept of storing objects on a flat surface. A well designed bookshelf is as functional as it is attractive. Yes they are called bookshelves but most decorators prefer to break up the monotony of rows of books with random bits of flair. The perfect bookshelf uses five elements: line, light, books, photographs, and decorations.

Lines and Level Surfaces

If examined closely a bookshelf is really nothing but rectangular shapes and horizontal lines. Line is actually a key element of design. To play around with the lines created by the level surfaces of shelves and books just practice rearranging them. Books can be sorted and stacked more ways than one. The most popular ways to stack books are on top of each other and side by side. The order of the books plays a key role from an aesthetic standpoint. Books of varying lengths and widths create a different pattern depending on how they are arranged.

Light to Read By

Visual reading remains by far one of the favourite methods of readers. Obviously with no light then it is not possible to read the books. There are small table lamps that can be placed on a spacious shelf that is tall enough to accommodate it lengthwise. Another idea to provide light in a dim area near a book shelf is to set a small lamp on a sturdy ledge or mantelpiece. If the lights ever go out then a hurricane lantern is ideal for candles. There are several kinds of candle holders available that suit most tastes. The traditional multi-tiered candleholder is a strong look and so is a hanging votive candle.

Libraries of Books

At the library they use the Dewey Decimal System or they alphabetize the books by author. But this is only one way to categorize each book on a shelf. Those with a large amount of volumes may want to consider another way to get organized. For example it is possible to just line books haphazardly as you tidy up.  Another way is to separate them by subject or type, with all of the science books on one shelf and biographies on another. Forgetting what is between the pages for a minute, books can be separated according to colour or size. Row after row of their similarly coloured books is an attractive pattern.

Photographic Records

There are photographic records in the library so putting a framed photo on the bookshelf at home is not that far of a stretch. Picture frames that are not hanging on the wall are often leaned against a shelf with those little kick stands. A special picture frame is perfect for holding prized photographs. The style of the frame should match the theme of the bookshelf. Really there are as many kinds of picture frames as there are bookshelves. A sleek and modern look may benefit from the stark contrast of a black and white photograph in a simple black frame.

Decorative Touches

Shelves are meant for storing any manner of interesting objects which is why they are so common in stores. Adding decorative touches to a bookshelf can have a broad meaning but this opens up a lot of options for creative expression. Fine art and sculpture has a place on the shelf and complements the learned air of books. However outside of a museum or gallery glassware, ceramics or metal items are art in and of themselves. Baskets are not only good looking they are a versatile method for organization on bookshelves. Decorative boxes, perhaps of porcelain or metal, invite one to see what is inside.
